Education has always been a passion of mine-- I started teaching in guitar lessons in high school, and was recruited as a senior by my school's string orchestra to teach the beginning middle school bassists. At Oberlin Conservatory, I became a student teacher with a full roster of bass students, and as a masters student at Juilliard I helped to lead workshops/clinics and taught at their jazz summer camps (including Juilliard Snow College Jazz Workshop). I taught middle school strings and jazz ensembles at The Calhoun School for 12 years, and worked on the faculty at the Calhoun Summer Jazz Workshop.
I teach guitar (acoustic/electric), bass (electric and upright), group guitar/bass lessons, music theory, and small ensembles (rock/jazz/etc). I believe that learning an instrument should be fun, and that it's a personal experience that looks different for every individual. I firmly believe that students should learn to play the music they enjoy listening to, and that making sound should be the first priority--I love teaching students how to read music, play with proper techinque, and learn the intricacies of music theory, but believe that the feeling of making sound and listening/playing with others should always come first. I am open to teaching MANY different genres of music, but specialize in groove-based music (jazz/rock/pop/soul/r&b/folk/etc)
